Last night the twitter feed of BBC One was taken over by the Sherlock team who left a few cryptic tweets about Sherlock. They hinted that more information would be released at 2:21pm today and even changed the Twitter name to Sherlock – 221Back.
These tweets had a lot of Sherlock fan all a quiver as to what this could mean. In a recent interview Martin Freeman hinted that Sherlock could be back for Christmas 2015, though that did seem unlikely as from recent years Sherlock has aired it’s first series opener on New Years Day, leaving Christmas for Doctor Who.
Well, at 2:21pm we had a series of tweets from BBC One announcing that Sherlock will be back with a special episode and series 4 to begin shortly after. They will begin filming the special in January 2015 and the series later in the year.
What I can take from that is we will have a special episode in the Autumn of 2015 and the 4th series beginning on New Years Day 2016. This being true to form with leaving 2 years between each series as both the main stars, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, being much in demand.
We can take from the tweets, and the cliff-hanger of series 3 that the special episode will deal with the return of Sherlock greatest arch-enemy, Moriarty and how he has appeared on every TV screen in the land.
I, for one, can not wait for Sherlock to return. This has been one of the BBC’s best drama created to date, and even the 2 year gap between each series opener has added to the mystique of the show. I only hope that there is still enough impetus for the series to continue to the 5th series and beyond, considering if all goes to plan, that when the 5th series is shown Sherlock is in it’s 8th year but only 12 episode to show for it.
However, as the BBC One twitter feed says, lets don our deerstalkers in anticipation…
