To call Alan Dean Foster a prolific author would be an injustice. He’s a writing machine and, thankfully, as skilled at building universes of his own creation (Midworld, Spellsinger, the Flinx adventures) as he is at fleshing out the worlds and words of others, which is precisely what he’s done in his many novelizations of screenplays (Dark Star, Alien, Starman, Transformers). Foster spent a good chunk of the 1970s penning Star Trek novels, but he’d stopped by 1979, finally returning to the franchise when asked to do the novelization of Star Trek (2009).
